AGROFORESTRY: Beneficial to nature and people

Published on: 17 March 2022

Agroforestry, recognised as an eco-responsible and innovative solution within reach, is being talked about around the world. But what does it involve?

This practice is nothing other than the combination of trees and crops. It would therefore put an end to the conflict between agriculture and nature conservation. A conflict that is very much on everyone's mind in a country like Madagascar, where monoculture, slash-and-burn farming and other illegal practices are commonplace.

Bôndy counts agroforestry among its many projects throughout the island. The objective remains the same: to regreen the red island hand in hand with local communities.

Thus, this reforestation season in 2022 will generate :

  • more vegetation
  • new jobs
  • a source of income for rural people, most of whom are farmers.

Beneficial to nature, man and his cultures ?

Beyond reforestation, planted trees play an important role in agroforestry: a climate protection role. Windbreaks, heat and water stress mitigators, these trees also provide organic matter to the crops, thus maintaining the ecosystem of the agricultural plots in the long term.

Agroforestry is therefore beneficial to both people and the environment.
The hardest part is convincing, but the stakes are still high. And thanks to Bôndy, the movement is launched.
