Mangrove project in the Boeny region: saving an entire ecosystem

Published on: 07 April 2022

Green cover and safeguarding local wildlife!
Known for its practicality and multiple medicinal virtues, the mangrove in the Boeny region is of crucial importance to the local populations of the region.

It provides :

   food

   firewood

   building materials

and acts as a natural treatment for those who need it

What about its ecological role?

From water filtration to carbon storage, mangroves help to cope with climate change and extreme natural events.

A contribution that lasts all year round because the mangrove is planted without too many seasonal requirements.

However, the poorly controlled exploitation of the mangrove deteriorates it considerably. In concrete terms, the overexploitation of this resource impacts the environment in both the short and long term.

Boeny, Madagascar

In Madagascar, mangroves protect marine areas against sedimentation from the western side of the island

They also ensure the protection of coastal wetlands from the adverse effects of climate change

It is thanks to these unique ecosystems that fish and invertebrates migrate to the reefs and the open sea to seek refuge for food and reproduction.

an entire ecosystem linked to mangroves

As asocial enterprise specialising in reforestation, Bôndy is helping to preserve this entire ecosystem through its project in the Boeny region of Mahajanga.

The fact is that it is essential to take into account the needs of local communities. All this while maximising environmental impacts.
And this is true of all Bôndy's projects.

TOGETHER, LET'S TURN THE RED ISLAND INTO A GREEN ISLAND!
