TOAMASINA PROJECT

Tamatave, Atsinanana Region, Madagascar

It grows

The east coast of Madagascar is known for its vegetation and abundant rainfall. If this part of the island is reputed to be "greener" than the others, it is currently facing all sorts of disturbances. In particular, a considerable drop in rainfall has had a serious impact on local vegetation and food crops. This is mainly due to deforestation and pollution in the region.

This is why it was obvious for Bôndy to set up an agroforestry project in the Atsinanana region. More precisely in Tamatave.

We aim to restore the vegetation cover of the area by including local communities. Focusing on cash crop and fruit trees, most of them short cycle.

The environmental impacts of this project:

  • 27,000 trees planted to date
  • 22 hectares of vegetation restored

Thanks to this project, Bôndy has also:

  • generated employment for local communities
  • encouraged food self-sufficiency
