A mobilizing event for the protection of water

On February 3, 2025, Lake Mandroseza, a key element of the Ikopa dam, was at the heart of the national celebrations of World Wetlands Day. This event highlighted the importance of these ecosystems for sustainable water management and their role in the supply of drinking water to the Malagasy capital, Antananarivo. Co-organized by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, as well as JIRAMA and the City of Antananarivo, this day brought together experts, local authorities and citizens around concrete initiatives in favor of wetlands.

Activities to Raise Awareness and Take Action

Several actions have been put in place in order to involve the population and to promote the preservation of wetlands. Environmental awareness sessions were organized for CEG Ambohimiandra students as well as for the general public. These meetings provided a better understanding of the essential role of wetlands in the sustainable management of water resources. A presentation by JIRAMA retraced the history of the Ikopa dam, highlighting the current challenges related to pollution, siltation and the effects of climate change on the capital's water supply. In addition, a photo competition has been launched to reward the most beautiful images of the lake and its wetlands. This initiative encouraged participants to take a fresh look at these ecosystems and to recognize their ecological value. Finally, a clean-up operation brought together young volunteers from Alliance Aika, MYBN and Bôndy Green Army. Together, they cleaned the shores of the lake, recalling through their commitment the importance of collective mobilization to protect these fragile and essential environments for life.

Preserving Wetlands, a Collective Commitment

World Wetlands Day 2025 at Lake Mandroseza highlighted an essential message: “Protecting wetlands means protecting our common future!” As reservoirs of biodiversity and natural regulators of water, these ecosystems must be at the center of environmental concerns to ensure sustainable resource management and a resilient future in the face of climate challenges. This mobilization shows that concerted action between authorities, experts and citizens can make a difference in the preservation of wetlands and the security of water for future generations.
